Historic cinema in Brixton

The "Ritzy Cinema and Cafe" in London, England, is a cultural gem in the vibrant district of Brixton, combining the allure of a historic cinema with a welcoming café and bar area. Part of the Picturehouse Cinemas chain, known for its independent and characterful cinemas, the Ritzy has established itself as a staple of the community since its opening in 1911. Originally built as the "Electric Pavilion," it is one of the oldest surviving cinemas in England and a Grade II listed building. Today, it features five screens and offers a mix of blockbusters, independent films, and special events that enrich the cultural life of South London.

Café with live music events

Upon entering the "Ritzy Cinema and Cafe," visitors are greeted by a charming ambiance that blends the building's history with modern elements. The main auditorium retains the glamour of the early cinema days with its impressive architecture, while the smaller screens create an intimate atmosphere. The café area, located on the ground floor, is a popular meeting spot, characterized by its relaxed vibe and friendly service. Here, you find a colorful mix of film enthusiasts enjoying a snack before or after a show, as well as guests simply soaking in the lively Brixton atmosphere. Upstairs, known as "Upstairs at the Ritzy," the space transforms into a venue for live music, comedy nights, and DJ sets, adding an extra cultural dimension to the establishment. In nice weather, the outdoor seating area offers views of the surroundings and invites guests to linger.

Best pizza at Ritzy café

Culinary offerings at the café in the "Ritzy Cinema and Cafe" include a selection of dishes perfectly suited for a cinema visit or a leisurely stay. Highlights include the crispy Margherita pizza, topped with fresh basil and a rich tomato sauce—simple yet flavorful, making it ideal to pair with a drink. The falafel wraps, served with a spicy tahini sauce, are also popular, providing a light but satisfying option. For those with a sweet tooth, the chocolate brownie is a tempting treat that strikes the perfect balance with its moist texture and a hint of salt. The drinks menu is equally diverse, featuring a selection of local beers, wines, and refreshing cocktails that complement the food well. Since the restaurant was taken over by "En Root," there has been a stronger focus on vegan and Indian-inspired street food options, expanding the offerings and introducing new flavors.

Initially I had a good impression of this venue given the bar and array of refreshments on offer, however that was soon shattered. As I made my way to Screen 4 my friend and I were met with a terrible smell, then to make matters worse once we entered the screen the floor was littered with popcorn. I'm not sure if the lack of hygiene protocols has something to do with the history of this venue, either way something needs to be done about it.

I always love a small cinema space and the Ritzy certainly delivered on that. I purchased tickets online. Smooth process and interactions with staff on site were super pleasant … the cleaner after the film was super delightful … hats off to her!

In case you are concerned after reading the negative reviews, it's actually the stench of hipster.
